(Note: This and "Swing Mr. Charlie" were recorded with
the popular jazz band Bob Crosby & His Orchestra. When the record
was released, no orchestra accompaniment was given. The band's manger,
Gil Rodin, told Decca that they didn't want to use their name with "this
unknown girl.") |

MARCH
OF THE DOAGIES
(Note: This recording was not given a Record Number because the song
was cut from the film "The Harvey Girls" prior to release
of the film and the "Decca
Cast Album" of songs from the film. It finally had its official
U.S. release in 1984 on the MCA Records LP "Judy
Garland - From The Decca Vaults" [MCA-907].
Also of note: the version included on the above mentioned album and
the 1994 CD boxed set "Judy
Garland - The Complete Decca Masters (plus)" [MCAD4/C4-11059/D
207185] was recorded on May 14, 1945. Additional recordings were
made on May 15; September 7; & September 10, 1945. Evidently
the only version to survive is the May 14, 1945 version). |

THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA & THE SANTA FE (full orchestra & chorus
version - repeat tag at end)
(Note: This is the complete original version Parts 1 & 2 -
Part 1 had its debut on the 1994 CD boxed set "Judy
Garland - The Complete Decca Masters (plus)" [MCAD4/C4-11059/D
207185]).
Part 2 (Judy's vocal) of
this song was re-recorded on 09-10-1945 and that is the version
heard on the original 78 album. When Decca began re-releasing these
recordings on LP in the 1950's, they mistakenly released this May
1945 rejected version of Part 2. This May 1945 version begins with
Judy singing "What A Lovely Trip" as
she does in the film, and ends with the repeat of the song title
3 times at the end (again as in the film). This "rejected" version
can be found on the 1989 CD "Judy
Garland - The Best Of The Decca Years Volume One - Hits!" [MCAD-31345]

THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA & THE SANTA FE (short version, minus
the choral intro - short ending)
(Note: This is the recording that was originally released on 78
as part of the original "Decca
Cast Album". When the cast album was re-released on LP in
the 1950's, Decca mistakenly used the rejected 05-15-1945 version
of Part 2. This September re-recording of Part 2 was not released
in the United States on LP until 1984, when it was included on the
MCA Records LP "Judy
Garland - From The Decca Vaults" [MCA-907]. It begins with
Judy singing "What A Lovely Day" (instead of "What
A Lovely Trip"
as in the film and the May recording) and ends with the "short
tag" (no
repeat of the song title as in the May recording and the film).
This is also the version included in the 1994 CD boxed set "Judy
Garland - The Complete Decca Masters (plus)" [MCAD4/C4-11059/D
207185] and coupled with the previously unreleased
Part 1). |
