M-G-M Records re-released their soundtracks in
these special "two-fer" sets in 1973. This set is
devoted to The Pirate along with the Esther Williams/Howard
Keel musical Pagan
Love Song (1950),
and the Debbie Reynolds/Jane Powell
musical
Hit The Deck (1955). Quite the variety of music and
quite enjoyable too.
Note: The song "House Of The Singing Bamboo" featured here
from Pagan
Love Song was originally recorded by Judy Garland & Ray
Bolger, with a different set of lyrics, for The Harvey
Girls (1946) as "Hayride" but was cut
from the film. "Hayride" first appeared on "Cut!
Outtakes From Hollywood Musicals" and later
the Rhino Records CD of the complete soundtrack.
Hit The Deck was released on CD, complete and in stereo,
in 2000 by Rhino Records. All previous releases of this soundtrack
had always been in mono format, even though the film was recorded
and presented in stereo. The first real stereo soundtrack album
released by M-G-M Records was Gigi in 1958.
The sides on these two records are set up
to play in order of sides on a "stackable" record
player. The records are stacked, then the first side of each
record is played, then they're flipped over so the remaining
two sides play.
