ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:
Sticker
This is it! The"Ultimate Oz" on CD. This two-disc special edition features all of the songs and music taken directly from the pre-recording sessions. Many tracks are extended versions and/or outtakes, and there is also a special supplemental section with even more outtakes, alternate takes, and rehearsal recordings.

Also included is a fantastic 48 page booklet with extensive liner notes by John Fricke detailing the origins of the original book and the making of the film. The booklet is lavishly illustrated with rare photos and artwork, many in full color.

The only negative to this set (and it's a small issue) is that the sound volume for all the tracks is unusually low. Plus, many of the multiple angles from the recording sessions survive, yet none of the tracks were remastered into stereo. This could be because the producers may have felt it would be too jarring to make the switch from mono to stereo and back. To hear the re-mixed "stereo" versions of the songs as they sounded in the 1998 theatrical prerelease, check out the single disc "The Story And Songs Of The Wizard Of Oz".

All images on this page from the collections of Scott Brogan and Eric Hemphill.

An Extra Special Thanks: [the producers] gratefully acknowledge a lifetime of invaluable contributions by MR. SCOTT PERRY of the Turner Sound Editing Department, an irreplaceable member of the M-G-M family who, at the time of this album's production, retired to a life of leisure and travel after 40 years of dedicated service. Scott began his career at Metro during preparation for the musical Hit the Deck. From that moment on, he was involved in the sound and music production of every M-G-M motion picture until 1986, at which time he joined the Turner organization following its acquisition of the M-G-M library. His incredible memory for details and anecdotes has served as a major source of information and delight for countless writers, historians, producers, and so many others. What the history books can't tell you, Scott can.

It is due to Scott's tremendous diligence, talent, and tenacity that many of the original M-G-M music masters and production documents were spared from the landfills and preserved for future generations. Certainly, this special edition of The Wizard Of Oz would not have been possible without his care and foresight. From those of us who had the pleasure to work with you, Scott, our warmest sentiments and special thanks from Munchkinland: "We Thank you very sweetly for doing it so neatly... "
