This 2005
release brings the soundtrack full circle. The A Star Is Born soundtrack selections
on this CD are the original mono versions that were released for years
on record until the 1988 CD release of the stereo soundtrack. These original mono versions have
never been available on CD before. The two previous CDs (1988 & 2004) took
the songs directly from the stereo soundtrack of the film.
This
is the only CD available with the soundtrack as it was released
by Columbia Records (and its subsidiaries) for over 30 years.
The sound quality on the soundtrack selections isn't band for old mono recordings. Although they pale in comparison
to the two stereo releases, they're still listenable. We're
so used ot the complete stereo versions that it's now odd
to hear these as originally released. A remastered, superior sounding version of this mono soundtrack edition of "The Man The Got Away" is featured on the 2008 2-CD set "Judy Garland - Classiques et inédits 1929 - 1956".
Contrary to what the CD states, the bonus tracks "from other
Judy Garland films" are actually the Decca Records singles
versions. The sound quality on these are not very good. Better
to get one of the CD compilations as shown in the Decca
Records Section of The Judy Garland Discography.
