A big thanks to "Mark in NYC" for putting this together: A chance to see what the originally intended "If I Only Had A Brain" might have looked like if the original, more subdued, audio outtake of the song was used. Plus, we get to see how the song might have looked and sounded with the original tag "...erve ya". Enjoy!
11-05-2009 BLU-RAY "EMERALD EDITION" DVD TO BE RELEASED DECEMBER 1ST
Warner Home Video has announced that the "Emerald Edition" of the OZ Blu-ray will be released on December 1st. This is the same release that was previously only available in Target stores in the U.S. for a limited time. It's basically the super-duper boxed set without the printed extras. In other words, you get the two Blu-ray discs with all the extras, and the standard DVD disc featuring the entire 6 hour documentary about the MGM Studios "When the Lion Roars". This is good news for those who did not want to get all the extras but did want the movie on Blu-ray. Yes, believe it or not some people just want the movie! :)
The one and only Harrods in London is celebrating the 70th anniversary of OZ with events (see the green lighting on the store above) and products and a chance to donate to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.
Fathom Events has announced that they will bring back their presentation of "OZ in HD" to 324 select theaters on Tuesday, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. local time.
Dan Diamond, VP of Fathom states in the press release: "Tens of thousands of fans nationwide celebrated the 70th anniversary of this beloved family classic in local movie theaters in September and due to the overwhelming response, we are proud to present a final opportunity for fans to gather again and experience `The Wizard of Oz` on the big screen," said Dan Diamond, vice president of Fathom.
He might have added that the whole enterprise was a failure, and a black eye to Warner Bros. After the screening September 23rd, reports immediate came in from all over the country. They weren't good. First of all, the film wasn't really presented in HD. In the days prior to the showing, theaters downloaded a digital copy of the film onto DVD from a satellite link. This is what was projected onto the big screen. The image quality was decidedly mixed, blurred in points, sharp in others, sometimes faded. You name it. The remix of the background score was at times overpowering. Worse than that, some theaters had to give refunds because they didn't perform the necessary quality control of the download prior to the screening, not realizing that the download didn't take and they were missing part of the film. At other showings, audiences were "treated" to on screen displays of the DVD menus and the fast forwarding through the mini-documentary. Some theaters had to stop and start the film due to "operator error" with the projection of the DVD. Obviously Fathom neglected to ensure the theaters knew how to present this digital presentation.
The recent press release also states: "The exclusive cut of "To Oz! The Making of a Classic" will offer audiences a look into how L. Frank Baum`s classic novel was transformed into one of the most beloved films of all time including archival interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and rare musical outtakes." This documentary isn't worth the time. Originally we were promised an HD version of the Scarecrow's cut dance, and that new early audio only outtake of "If I Only Had A Brain". Well, that didn't happen. The doc was a chopped up version of the old 50th anniversary doc featuring Angela Lansbury. I spoke to the producer of the doc, and he explained that unfortunately they were limited to what was given them, and the short time frame of the doc. In other words, they weren't given the right tools.
My advice: STAY AWAY. This presentation SHOULD have been a wider release ON FILM STOCK. Stay home and watch the Blu-ray disc, because that will give you a much better viewing experience than this poorly executed "event". I'm amazed they're actually trying to repeat it. Obviously they're more interested in money than integrity. This film deserves to be seen on the big screen at its best. This is not its best. A person close to Warner Bros. recently stated that the more quality minded people at Warner Bros. are also surprised that the company would allow one of their greatest assets to be presented this way. Well - where are they? Speak up! They should stand up and stop this from being repeated and issue an apology to the fans and general public out there for messing up a golden opportunity to present the film as no one has ever seen. Instead, we get what looks like a bad print.
Shame on you, Warner Bros., for taking the greedy way out.
Blu-ray.com has confirmed a pared down version of the OZ Blu-ray disc being offered at Target stores.
There is also mention of a special edition at Walmart, but that's not confirmed yet.

iTunes will have the newly restored version of OZ available for viewing and downloading on September 29th. It's also #1 on their classics chart. The film will be sold for $14.99 and will include many extras. Click on the iTunes button at right or the image above....
Also of note is Amazon's new listing of the Rhino Records 2-CD deluxe edition of the soundtrack (see left). Originally released in 1995, this set has been out of print for quite some time, but Amazon now has it available again and notes that it's an "original recording reissued". ONE NIGHT ONLY!
OZ on the big screen in HD!!
September 23, 2009:
This summer is an important milestone for The Wizard of Oz as it marks the 70th anniversary of the film. The release of "The Real Wizard of Oz" by Rebecca Loncraine (August 20, 2009, Gotham , $30) gives us yet another reason to celebrate Oz this summer! "The Real Wizard of Oz" is the first full biography-from birth to the years following his death-that looks at the people, places, history, culture, and literature that influenced the incredible storyteller, L. Frank Baum.
Baum is as fascinating as his characters and his life has more twists and turns then a cyclone. From the Civil War to women's suffrage, from amputation to modern medicine, from psychics to industrialization, Baum saw it all and it was reflected in his writings.
Rebecca is a renowned expert on Oz and Baum. She has traveled the US to study him, his works and the impact they had on our culture.
She explores the myths and legends of Oz, as well....
· Was Baum haunted by his younger brothers and sister who passed away at an early age?
· Did he move to the plains because of his inherent fear of the woods
· (and did that set the scene for the Wicked Witch's layer)?
· Was OZ really named from the O-Z on his file cabinet?
· Was the book really a reaction to the Populist party?
· What was Baum's incredible connection to PT Barnum?
· And how has this single story become America 's oldest and most oft repeated and revered stories.
JUDY ROOM NOTE: I haven't read the book yet, but I have a copy. It's a nice hardbound book with some great photos (including the first photo ever taken of a tornado!)
Warner Home Video has finally released artwork and some promotional material for the upcoming 70th anniversary editions of The Wizard of Oz on standard DVD and Blu-Ray.
