Easter Parade

ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:

Although this is, so far, the "definitive" release of the Easter Parade soundtrack, the quality of the audio varies from good to poor. Some of this is due to the fact that the producers used playback discs (see Producer's Note below). This is very evident in the version of "A Couple Of Swells" used on this CD. The sound is very muffled, and the producers would have done better to have used the soundtrack from the film as they did for "I Want To Go Back To Michigan (Down On The Farm)". In spite of this, overall this is still the best CD soundtrack for the film.

From the "Producer's Notes":

This album has been digitally remastered from the best available analog source material. By most estimations, MGM was the leader among the major studios in preserving its music masters. Despite the time-honored beauty and popularity of Easter Parade, even MGM could not completely protect the film's original music production masters against the aging process. In our desire to provide the listener with this definitive collection of recorded music from the film, we conducted a fruitful search for alternative sources. Therefore, discerning listeners will notice that the fidelity sometimes varies in tone from recording to recording.

Among the master formats we found were several rare playback discs (records created to play on the set while the actors lip-synched their performances), parts of the original 1948 MGM soundtrack album, and a 1/4-inch "comp" master (a compilation of an orchestra performance with a separately recorded vocal performance). For "I Want To Go Back To Michigan (Down On The Farm)," the only surviving recording was a print master of the actual film; therefore, the listener will hear applause from the onscreen audience.

Academy Award Winner: 1948 Best Scoring of a Musical Picture (Johnny Green & Roger Edens)
