Judy Sings Judy

Judy Sings JudyIf you life in the San Francisco Bay Area, or are visiting during the dates of April 16th - April 18th, you must see the amazing 15-year-old Judy Butterfield at the world famous Empire Plush Room.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to see the initial run-through of her tribute to the young Judy Garland entitled "Judy Sings Judy" and let me tell you, this girl is amazing. An absolutely enchanting performer.

Judy Butterfield does not try to imitate or impersonate Judy Garland, but rather she pays tribute to the young Garland by telling the audience the story of Garland's early career with anecdotes and of course, with songs. In her own wonderful style, Ms. Butterfield sings some of Garland's better known early hits, as well as some lesser-known numbers that are sure to delight the audience. It's obvious that Ms. Butterfield enjoys singing this style of music - and that joy comes through in her flawless delivery.

Ms. Butterfield is joined briefly by 16-year-old piano virtuoso Sam Reider for a tribute medley of songs from the popular Rooney/Garland series of films, plus a special piano solo by Reider that is amazing.

Judy Butterfield's career is similar to Garland's in that here she is only 15, and already a seasoned performer with a natural talent, and having already made cabaret appearances in New York and San Francisco.

Under the flawless direction of Clifford Bell, and accompanied by Musical Director Ken Muir, Judy Butterfield presents a warm and loving tribute to Judy Garland. Who could ask for anything more?

A definite MUST SEE - the show runs the evenings of April 17th (7pm) and 18th (8pm) at the Empire Plush Room - with a special "Young People's Preview" at 2pm on April 16th. The $5.00 donation at the door goes to benefit the Haight Ashbury Food Program.

So give yourself a treat and go and see Judy Butterfield's tribute to Judy Garland "Judy Sings Judy - Songs of a Young Garland". You won't be disappointed!

Fifteen Year Old Judy Butterfield to Headline at Empire Plush Room

Special Young People’s Preview added to Benefit Haight Ashbury Food Program

Fifteen year old San Francisco native Judy Butterfield makes her headline debut at the Empire Plush Room performing Judy Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland April 17th at 7pm and April 18th at 8:00pm.

A protégé of the incomparable Andrea Marcovicci, Judy Butterfield made her New York debut at Town Hall as part of the Fifteenth Annual Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention and was a guest of Ms. Marcovicci on the Plush Room stage last July.

Judy Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland marks the first time that the Empire Plush Room has added a special Young People’s Preview to welcome audiences under 21 years old to experience the magic of cabaret.  The April 16th, 2:00pm performance is a benefit for Haight Ashbury Food Program with $5 tickets at the door.

Judy Butterfield, a freshman at Urban High School, has played Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet”, the Baker’s Wife in “Into the Woods”, and appeared in A.C.T.’s “A Christmas Carol”. With Judy Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland, Judy Butterfield uses her own distinct voice and gift for storytelling to bring to life the world in which Ms. Garland began her career. Join Judy for a journey from Grand Rapids Minnesota to Hollywood; from MGM to somewhere over the rainbow.

Judy Sings Judy is directed by acclaimed cabaret director Clifford Bell.  Mr. Bell directed “Direct From Broadway” featuring Tony Award winners Debbie Gravitte (Jerome Robbins’ Broadway) and Michael Maguire (Les Miserables). He has produced many leading cabaret artists including local favorites Sharon McNight, Shelly Markham, and Wesla Whitfield at the world famous Cinigrill at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.

Ken Muir, described by “The New York Daily News” as “a breathtaking pianist”, will join Judy as Musical Director.  Mr. Muir has appeared numerous times at the Plush Room, having played piano and provided critically acclaimed arrangements for each of Paula West’s first three CDs.

Judy will also be joined on stage by Sam Reider for a tribute to the beloved performing team of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. Mr. Reider, also a student at Urban High School, is an accomplished pianist, singer and composer. He has performed with Dave Ellis, Smuin Ballet, and the SF Jazz All-Star High School Ensemble.
