JUDY
GARLAND AT THE GROVE
set for CD release January 22, 2008

Image: Cover to the original 1959 album.
News has been leaked that DRG will indeed
released the "complete"" Judy Garland At The
Grove" on CD (for the first time!) on January 22, 2008.
"Judy Garland At The Grove" was the first official
live Garland album ever released. It was recorded August
5, 1958 during Judy's final performance of her run at
the Coconut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles,
CA - with Freddy Martin and his Orchestra. By this last
night,
Judy's
voice
was
suffering
severe
fatigue - but she's still wonderful! If Capitol had recorded
the opening night's performance on July 23, 1958 it would
have made for a better representation of Judy's appearance
at the Grove, which garnered rave reviews.
Two tracks not included on the LP ("Day In, Day Out" and "I Can't
Give You Anything But Love") were included in Capitol's 1991 boxed set "The
One And Only" as was the complete version of "When You're Smiling" (The
LP version was edited because Judy's microphone
picked up feedback halfway through her performance - this was rectified with
modern technology).
[CORRECTION: It's actually the "Overture" that
is incomplete on the original LP - "When You're Smiling" is complete
on the LP, the liner notes on "The
One And Only" are incorrect.]
Five tracks were included in the the 2002 compilation "Classic
Judy Garland - The Capitol Years: 1955 - 1965" ("Day In, Day Out"; "I
Can't Give You Anything But Love"; "Purple People Eater", "When
The Sun Comes Out"; and the previously unreleased "Do It Again").
Cover art and complete track listing coming soon!

THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! & WIZARD OF OZ HD & BLU-RAY ANNOUNCED
There has been some recent activity on the Garland (and other) discussion groups about an announcement made over at The Digital Bits website (www.thedigitalbits.com - scroll down just past Harry Potter), of upcoming HD and Blu-Ray DVDs coming from Warner Home Video in the next year. That's Entertainment! (gift set and separate films) and The Wizard Of Oz are listed. John Fricke, who is usually involved in these Warner Home Video projects, responded with: "Despite that specific announcement, I don't think OZ actually will be
released in the new configuration until 2009....".
Meanwhile, Max Preeo has announced that the That's Entertainment "collection" is
set for HD & Blu-Ray release on November 11 of this year
[NOTE: Warner Home Video has announced the release date at
November 13th]. If so, this will be the first appearance
of Garland on HD & Blu-Ray.
Though technically not "Judy
Garland films", the That's Entertainment! series
heavily feature Garland in all three installments, and in
the bevy of extras that are sure to be included.
It will be wonderful to see these films in HD & Blu-Ray. I can't think of a better way to get people excited about the MGM Musicals in the High-Def format than to show these films. Of course, we all know that Oz will look amazing - something to definitely look forward to in 2009 - or hopefully earlier!!
As soon as we hear anything official from Warner Home Video, we'll keep you updated!!!
Also from The Digital Bits (dated 09-18-07):
Finally, though we hinted at it last week, Warner has officially announced the Blu-ray and HD-DVD release of That's Entertainment: The Complete Collection as a 3-disc set on 11/13 (SRP $79.98 each). All three films in the series will be included in full 1080p video, including That's Entertainment!, That's Entertainment, Part 2 and That's Entertainment! III. You'll also get 5 hours worth of bonus material, including 3 documentaries, premiere night coverage, salutes to the behind-the-camera talents, TV specials, making-of featurettes, an extensive video jukebox of rare musical outtakes from classic films and more. I know at least one person in NYC who's going to rush out and buy a high-def player just for this release. Good news indeed.

JUDY ROOM ARCHIVE
There is a new "section" here in The Judy Room: The
Judy Room Archive.
This new section details the history of The Judy Room
including previous homepages
and "sub-pages"
going all the way back to 1999. Plus, the original "Judy
Room Tour" is back, and expanded with more scans
of the original "room".
It's a fun trip down "memory lane", and something that
I hope to add more to as I go through the old files and
images.

âgolden age.â We're especially thrilled that Mickey Rooney

more meaningful.â
The Films
Babes
in Arms (1939)
Babes in Arms, is considered the quintessential Mickey
Rooney-Judy Garland musical. Freely adapted from the
1937 Rodgers and Hart Broadway hit of the same name,
it marked the producing debut of Arthur Freed, who
would go on to create some of the greatest musical
films in motion picture history. To direct the film,
Freed hired the legendary Busby Berkeley, who had recently
migrated from Warner Bros. to Metro, and Berkeley neatly
handled the filmâs direction and choreography, with
the results being a total sensation. The film went
into production immediately after the completion (but
before the release of) The Wizard
of Oz (1939), and
Oz fans will be amused to find âThe Wicked Witch of
the Westâ actress Margaret Hamilton, once again taking
on the role of screen villainess. The semi-autobiographical
plot features Rooney playing Mickey Moran, the talented
son of a vaudeville team, who rounds up all his fellow
child entertainers to stage a fund-raiser show to help
out his financially-strapped folks. Variety called
it âa topflight filmusical entertainment.â
Warner Home Videoâs new DVD presents the home video
premiere of the film as originally released in 1939.
Previous video incarnations represented the film as it
was cut for reissue after the end of World War II, when
M-G-M removed a charming sequence featuring Mickey and
Judy impersonating Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
At the time, Metro felt the public would not want to
see the recently deceased F.D.R. parodied on film, but
unfortunately, the studio did not retain any film materials
from this deleted number, as it had been cut out of all
negatives and prints. Using a recently discovered collectorâs
print as source material, the sequence âRooseveltâ sequence
(a/k/a âMy Dayâ) has been permanently restored to the
film.
DVD Special Features:

Strike up the Band (1940)
Mickey plays Jimmy Connors, the leader of his high school
band hoping to compete in a nationwide radio contest.
Judy is his girlfriend and chief vocalist. Famed orchestra
leader Paul Whiteman appears in the film, which is
highlighted by a massive Busbv Berkeley production
number called âDo The La Congaâ and Mickey shows off
his percussive skills in the âDrummer Boyâ sequence.
The film also features the Oscar-nominated song âOur
Love Affairâ and a rousing finale with the Gershwinsâ
title tune.

Babes on Broadway (1941)
This musical treat showcases the teenage duoâs talents
as they come up with the idea to produce a show to
send orphaned children on a country holiday, as well
as to promote their beginning careers. The film gave
Mickey and Judy the opportunity to introduce the now-famous
ballad âHow About Youâ, as well as Mickeyâs unforgettable
impersonation of Carmen Miranda. The film ends with
a massive Busby Berkeley production extravaganza, which
was one of the highlights of M-G-Mâs hit musical compilation
Thatâs Entertainment! in 1974.
DVD Special Features:
* Introduction by Mickey Rooney
* Pete Smith Specialty comedy short How to Hold Your
Husband Back
* Classic cartoon Dance of the Weed

Girl Crazy (1943)
George and Ira Gershwinâs 1930 Broadway hit served as
the basis for Mickey and Judyâs last starring picture
together. The tunes are sublime -- "Embraceable
You," "Fascinating Rhythm," âBidinâ
My Time,â and a beautiful Garland solo on "But
Not for Me." The plot has rich playboy Rooney,
sent away to an all-male college out West as a way
of keeping him in check, and the only gal in town is
Judy, the granddaughter of the school's dean. Busby
Berkeley staged the colossal dude-ranch finale to the
Gershwin standard, "I Got Rhythmâ, with Mickey,
Judy, and a cast of hundreds, all accompanied by Tommy
Dorsey and His Orchestra. Look for a special appearance
by a very young June Allyson singing âTreat Me Rough.â

JUDY
GARLAND FESTIVAL
It's probably not big
news, but here is a handy link with a run-down of
all of the events and the upcoming Judy Garland Festival
in Grand Rapids next week (June 8-10, 2007):
http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20070523/AQW01523052007-1.html
Note: It has been brought
to my attention that how
I worded the above could be mis-interpreted.
What I meant by it not being "big news" is that
it's really not "news" at this point, as the festival
has been planned for quite some time and the information
has been out for quite a while. Having been on vacation for
a week, and away from the Internet completely, I recently
saw this nice run-down of the the events and thought I'd
post an easy link here. That's all. I certainly did not intend
any disrespect to the event or its organizers. My apologies
if anyone was under that impression. :)

PLEASE NOTE that the following are NOT
the official cover art for the upcoming boxed set.
As stated below, but still of some confusion to certain
folks out there, these are "faux sets"
created for FUN and FUN ONLY over at The
Judy Garland Message Board
and in no way are they affiliated
with Warner Home Video.

Mickey & Judy
"The Signature Collection"
[original
statement] Not really! This is actually a wonderful idea for
the artwork for the upcoming boxed set. It was made
by "alexinbelgium" as
part of a fun "contest" over at The
Judy Garland Message Board for DVD cover art ideas.
Alex also works his magic on most of those wonderful
album cover restorations for The
Judy Garland Online Discography.
I think you'll agree that even
though this is a "faux
cover", it certainly looks like something Warner
Home Video could use. I hope they're watching! [end

Get ready for toe-tapping, finger-snapping and tune-whistling
fun when Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory
Volume 2, a collection of seven newly-remastered
favorites from Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer's Golden Era, arrives
July 24 from Warner Home Video.
The collection features the DVD debuts of The Pirate, That's
Dancing, and Words and Music along with two
new to DVD Double Feature discs: a pair of Mario Lanza/Kathryn
Grayson musicals -- That Midnight Kiss and The
Toast of New Orleans, and two Fred Astaire favorites
-- Royal Wedding and The Belle of New York.
Following last year's successful Volume
1 (It's Always Fair Weather, Summer
Stock, Three Little Words, Till
the Clouds Roll By, and Ziegfeld
Follies), this second spectacular collection of
the fabled studio's vintage musicals
features some of the most memorable numbers by the greatest
stars of the genre, top lined by the Hollywood musical's
golden trio of immortal legends -- Judy Garland, Fred Astaire
and Gene Kelly. Landmark numbers
include Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling and with a
coat rack, Gene Kelly 's "Be a Clown," and Judy
Garland belting out "Johnny One Note." The talents
of Mickey Rooney, Jane Powell, Lena Horne, Ray Bolger and
many more stars are also showcased.
Each feature film has been meticulously restored and remastered
from its original elements and complemented with new featurettes,
commentaries, rare outtake musical numbers, radio interviews,
audio only bonus outtakes and vintage cartoons. The titles
will be available individually for $19.97 SRP, the 2-disc
DVD of Royal Wedding/The Belle of New York and
2-disc set of That Midnight Kiss/The Toast of New Orleans will
sell for $24.98 SRP and the seven-disc collection will
sell for $59.92 SRP.
The Pirate (1948)
A
treasure trove of fun awaits when a Caribbean beauty
(Judy Garland) with a mad crush on a legendary pirate
meets a vagabond actor (Gene Kelly) who poses as the
scoundrel. Vincente Minnelli, who was married to Garland
at the time, directs, bringing his uncanny skill with
color and design to this joyous romp set to Cole Porter
tunes. Mixing tremulous girlishness with hellcat hilarity,
Garland was never better as a comedienne. Parodying the
rakish style of Fairbanks and Barrymore, Kelly duels,
dupes and dances with buccaneer bravado. All by itself,
his "Be a Clown" (danced with the Nicholas
Brothers and reprised with Garland) is reason enough
to love the film.
DVD Special Features:
Commentary by historian John Fricke (Noted Garland biographer
Fricke details every aspect of this tempestuous production
as Garland, Kelly and Minnelli pushed the artistic limits
of the movie musicals to the breaking point)
New featurette The Pirate: A Musical Treasure Chest

"Voodoo" and "You Can Do No Wrong"
Promotional radio interviews with Gene Kelly for On
the Town and Judy Garland for The Pirate
Theatrical trailer
Subtitles: English (feature film only)
Words and Music (1948)
Hart
wrote the lyrics. Rodgers wrote the music. Audiences
still applaud the results. Mickey Rooney (as Lorenz Hart)
and Tom Drake (as Richard Rodgers) team in a splashy
biopic of the songwriters behind Babes in Arms, Pal Joey
and more Broadway classics. In glossy Hollywood style,
the film plays loose with facts and lets the songs speak
for themselves. Judy Garland belts out
"Johnny One Note". Lena Horne delivers a haunting "Where
or When". Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen lead a streetwise "Slaughter
on 10th Avenue ballet". Some 22 songs/specialties
and a baker's dozen of major stars are included within
the film.
DVD Special Features:
Commentary by historian Richard Barrios [Author and historian
Barrios provides fascinating insights into the genius
of Rodgers and Hart, one of the greatest songwriting
teams of the twentieth century, and why the studio failed
to bring the truth of Hart's story to the screen.]
New featurette A Life in Words and Music
Oscar-nominated Theatre of Life 1948 MGM short Going
to Blazes!
1948 MGM classic cartoon The Cat That Hated People

Love",
"I Feel at Home with You", "Manhattan" (alternate
version), "My Funny Valentine",

version) and "Way Out West On West End Avenue"
Theatrical trailer
Subtitles: English (feature film only)
Double Feature: That
Midnight Kiss (1949) and The Toast Of New
Orleans (1950)
The muscular tenor of Mario
Lanza combines with the bright coloratura of Kathryn
Grayson in two marvelous musicals. Lanza makes his
debut in That Midnight Kiss as a trucker
who travels the road to romance and musical
success. Pianist José Iturbi, who helped
popularize classical music on film, makes his final
movie appearance in this breezy treat. Next, big
voices conquer the Big Easy in The Toast of
New Orleans, with selections from
Verdi, Bizet, the popular "Be My Love" and
more. David Niven co-stars in this tale of a haughty
diva and the shrimp fisherman whose talent she
discovers.
DVD Special Features:

Double Feature: Royal
Wedding (1951) and The Belle of New York (1952)
Fred Astaire slips on
his dancing shoes for two magical musicals. In roles
loosely based on Fred's career with his sister Adele,
he and Jane Powell play siblings whose London stage engagement
overlaps Princess Elizabeth's
Royal Wedding. Stanley Donen directs this delight which
features Astaire's famous dance with a hat rack, as
well as his famous dancing on the walls and ceiling
to the song "You're All The World To Me".
Lovely Jane Powell was
given her first "adult" role in this smash
hit, in which she introduced the Oscar-nominated Burton
Lane/Alan Jay Lerner hit "Too Late Now".
On the other side of the pond, Fred and Vera-Ellen
star in The Belle of New York. Loosely based
on a turn of the century stage play, this 1952 screen
treatment is a showcase for sensational songs by Harry
Warren and Johnny Mercer, and the incomparable talents
of the two stars, all under the inspired direction
of Charles Walters. Fred plays a playboy who sings
("I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man"). She's a charity
worker likelier to prefer a guy with his feet on the
ground until Fred dances her off her feet and into
the sky.
DVD Special Features:
Disc One - Royal Wedding
Private Screenings with Stanley Donen [2006 TCM special]

That's Dancing! (1985)
Executive producer Gene Kelly hosts this extravagant
celebration of dance that features some of his greatest
screen work, as well as performances that range from
Baryshnikov to break dancing, Fred and Ginger to Shirley
Temple and Bojangles, and Busby Berkeley spectaculars
to Michael Jackson music videos. Written, produced, and
directed by Jack Haley Jr., who performed the same duties
creating the legendary That's Entertainment! in 1974, That's
Dancing! follows a similar structure. Kelly, joined
by co-hosts Ray Bolger, Sammy Davis Jr., Mikhail Baryshnikov
and Liza Minnelli, set the stage for clips from the peerless
M-G-M musicals, also featuring landmark moments of dance
on film from virtually every studio in the industry,
adding more fun and glorious surprises. This cinema anthology
spanning eight decades of dance has boundless energy,
unending artistry and "no shortage of showstoppers" (Entertainment
Weekly).

SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE
BY END OF SUMMER 2007
From the Home
Theater Forum Live Chat with Warner Home Video (George
Feltenstein, SVP Catalog Marketing, Warner Home Video;
George Parker, Executive Director Catalog Marketing,
Warner Home Video; Ronnee Sass, VP Publicity and Promotions
Catalog Marketing, Warner Home Video)
Monday, February 26, 2007:
<DennisG [Home Theater Forum]> Is the Mickey Rooney/Judy
Garland box set still on track for this year?
<WARNER> Oh, boy is it!!!!!! We think you'll be very
pleased. We've added lots of special extra goodies! You'll
have it before the Summer is over.
Also of interest to musicals fans:
<WARNER> ...KISMET and PETE KELLY will be coming
next year (2008). Sorry, guys, but we program 2 years ahead.
Both will be restored and have 5.1.
HIT THE DECK is coming too, and other non-musical Scope/Stereo
epics! ...YES! BUSBY BERKELEY VOL. 2 will be out in 2008.
Thanks for supporting BUZZ!
MAME is coming. We were waiting to do it in Stereo, and
we found that it can't be achieved. So we are releasing
it very soon, but it will be, as it was in theaters, in
mono. We spent years trying to make it happen, and we couldn't,
so at least the film will be released, and it will look
and sound very good.
Big MGM Musical promo coming shortly....some great titles,
big surprises...and hope to have an Eleanor Powell set
done before the year's end. Lana maybe 2008. Nothing for
Hedley...ummm..I mean Hedy Lamarr at the moment.
Contrary to what false information you may have read elsewhere,
we have no plans to release the MacDonald/Eddy films anytime
soon. Serious film element issues requiring restoration
prevent our releasing them on a more expedited basis. We
want them to be beautiful and sound great when they finally
are released.
We'll give one tid bit.....ROYAL WEDDING is being rescued
from PUBLIC DOMAIN HELL ! YAY!

Judy sings "It's Love I'm After" in Pigskin
Parade (1936)
From
20th Century-Fox Video: Pigskin Parade on DVD May 22,
2007.
This was Judy's feature film debut, and the only time during
her tenure with MGM they would loan her to another studio.
Judy was only 14 when she made the film, and she steals
the show with her threes songs: "The Balboa", "The
Texas Tornado" and "It's Love I'm After".
No word yet on any extras. However on previous DVD releases,
Fox has been good about adding outtake footage and other
extras. Hopefully Judy's outtake pre-recording of "Hold
That Bulldog" will be included.
So far, only DVD
Empire has it available for preorder.
No cover art yet - we'll post it as soon as we see it.

The Judy

to resemble a "vintage" album cover. The "banner

We've also started adding larger versions of album covers
to the pages, now that the bulk of the Discography is done
(we still are adding more records and CDs though!). Go
to The Discography Updates page
to see which covers are first out of the gate.
