IN
THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME - (MGM 1949)
(Release Date: April 6, 2004)
Although this film has
several great musical performances by Judy, it's her comedic
talents that really get to shine. A nice, light-hearted musical
remake of the 1940 James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan comedy The
Shop Around The Corner about two feuding store employees
who are unknowingly having a pen-pal romance via letters
with each other. The film would be re-made in 1998 with Tom
Hanks and Meg Ryan as You've Got Mail (replacing
the pen-pal plot device with AOL's chat system).
Judy and Van Johnson make a nice team and all of the performances are well
done, including Buster Keaton in his final MGM film, and little 2 1/2 Liza
Minnelli in her first film (she plays the child of Judy and Van's characters
at the end of the film).
Also released October 12, 2004 as a special "two-fer" budget priced set with
For Me And My Gal (see below).
