JUDGMENT
AT NUREMBERG (United Artists - 1961)
(Release Date: September 7, 2004)
The first of Judy's resurgent film career in the early 60's,
a beautifully executed dramatic performance as a German woman
who, during World War II, is persecuted by the Nazis for her
innocent friendship with an older Jewish man. Now, during the
post-war war crimes tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany, she is
forced to relive the horror by giving testimony. Judy was nominated
for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. She lost to Rita Moreno
is West Side Story. Puhleeze! Yet another case of
the Academy giving the Oscar for popularity, rather than actual
performance.
Everyone's performance in this classic film is perfect. Spencer Tracy, Burt
Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Marlene Dietrich, a young William Shatner, and
Maximillian Schell (who the Oscar for Best Actor).
The film is a must-see history lesson on the effects of war, from both sides,
and the attitudes and feelings and lessons hopefully learned. Not many films
about World War II are this effective and this good.
Originally released in the late 90's on DVD (see right), this special edition
