ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:

A grand total of 14 previously unreleased tracks (15 if you count the quick intro chat to the alternate take of "It's Yourself") are the main attraction here.  The two discs highlight Judy's studio sessions for Capitol Records at London's famous Abbey Road Studios from 1957-1964, all newly remastered.

It's worth pointing out that this is not a complete anthology of all of the known takes from this time period.  Some people assume it is.  It's not, nor is it marketed or presented as such.  The known alternates not included in this release are:

I Could Go On Singing  Another alternate was released on the 2002 CD "Classic Judy Garland - The Capitol Years 1955-1965"
According to this disc's producer Jonathan Summers, the "Garland Estate" (the "Heir's Trust") rejected the inclusion
of this previously released alternate take without explanation.
Why Was I Born?  Another alternate take was released on the 2006 CD "The Essential Judy Garland"

Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe  Another alternate was released on the 2006 CD "The Essential Judy Garland"
Over The Rainbow  Another alternate (Take 1) was released on the 2007 CD "The Very Best of Judy Garland"
Stormy Weather  Another alternate (Take 1) was released on the 2007 CD "The Very Best of Judy Garland"

The set ends in 1964, thereby excluding the 1965 studio recordings Judy made with daughter Liza Minnelli to augment the "Live at the London Palladium" recordings.

Notes about the recording dates:  The liner notes have what first appear to be incorrect recording dates.  The following are all listed with a recording date of August 9, 1960.  The last day of recording for what became known as "The London Sessions" was supposedly August 8, 1960.  These are noted in the track listing below with a blue asterisk *.

Stormy Weather  Matrix 33440 recorded August 2 (the release take is here noted as Aug. 9, Take 4 as Aug. 2)
Over The Rainbow  Matrix 34448 recorded August 4
Garland Medley  Matrix 34449 recorded August 5
Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe  Matrix 34451 recorded August 5
Palace Medley  Matrix 34453 recorded August 8
It's A Great Day For The Irish  Matrix 34456 recorded August 8 (the release take is here noted as Aug. 9, Take 4 as Aug. 2)

Additionally, the following recording dates dates have been updated with this new release:
It's Lovely To Be Back In London  Thought to have been recorded on October 12, 1957, here listed as October 11.
Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe  Matrix 34451 originally recorded August 5, 1960, here listed as August 8.

The producer's notes explain the date issue:  "In recent years CD re-issues of Garland's Capitol recordings have included incorrect recording information and with this issue we have made every effort to provide correct recording dates.  Where we have had the original tapes, these have been the source for the discographical information, but in other instances we have had to rely on a document prepared by Capitol in 1977, some dates from which do not correspond with those on the extant tape boxes."

"The London Studio Recordings" is beautifully packaged in the "digi-book" format (hardbound book style, with the two CDs in their own sleeves).  Plus, the sound quality is excellent and the liner notes by Jonathan Summers are excellent.

It's a new "must have" for Judy fans, and of course all fans of great music.
